Othman's Guelph is at 87 Macdonell St, two minutes' walk from Guelph Central Station, open seven days with student cuts from $30.
Downtown Guelph has never been short of places to get a haircut, but the list changes. Shops open, shops close, and barbers move between them. If the chair you have used for years is suddenly gone, or you have just moved into the core, the question is the same: who do you trust with your head?
Here is how to work that out quickly, and honestly, without booking three haircuts to find out.

Look at the work, not the fit-out
A good barbershop and a well-decorated one are different things. Before you book anywhere, find the shop's Instagram and look at twenty recent cuts, not the three on the website.
Are the fades actually blended, or is there a visible line where one length stops?
Do the necklines look clean on the back-of-head shots, or are those shots missing?
Is there variety — scissor work, longer styles, beards — or the same cut on twenty heads?
A shop that only posts one cut can probably only do one cut well. That is fine if it is the cut you want.
Ask what happens before the clippers start
The difference between a haircut you like and one you tolerate is usually decided in the first two minutes. A barber who asks how you wear it, how often you get it cut and what went wrong last time is going to give you a better result than one who reaches straight for the guard.
If nobody asks you anything, you are getting the shop's default cut.
Practical things that matter downtown
Parking in the core is metered and tight at peak times. Guelph Central Station is the easy answer if you are coming from anywhere on the transit network or in on the GO — most of Macdonell St is a two-minute walk from it.
Check whether a shop takes walk-ins or is appointment-only. Appointment-only is not worse, but it changes how you plan. If you want to be able to turn up on a Saturday because your week got away from you, you need a shop that keeps chairs open.
And check the hours, not the Google listing from two years ago. Holiday hours in particular catch people out.
Where we sit in all this
Othman's is at 87 Macdonell St, two minutes from Guelph Central Station. We take walk-ins seven days a week and you can book a specific barber by name online.
We are known for fades — skin, zero, taper and burst — but Guelph is also where we do a lot of scissor work: mod cuts, side parts, French crops and longer textured styles cut with shears rather than clippers. Beard shaping and line-ups too.
Every appointment opens with a consultation, and we cut every hair type — straight, wavy, curly, coily and Afro-textured. University of Guelph and Conestoga Guelph students get student pricing with a valid ID.
If you are shopping around, that is genuinely the right thing to do. Look at the work, ask the questions above, and pick the chair that answers them best.
