Skin Fade or Taper Fade? A Straight Comparison

Two cuts, two very different maintenance schedules

A skin fade goes bare at the neckline and needs recutting every 2 to 3 weeks; a taper starts at a guard, leaves length behind and holds for 4 to 6. At Othman's a skin fade is $40, a taper $35.

A skin fade goes bare at the neckline; a taper fade starts at a guard and leaves length behind. The look is close — the upkeep is not. Skin fade is $40 at Othman's, taper is $35.

What is the actual difference?

A skin fade takes the shortest point down to the skin, so the gradient starts at nothing. A taper fade starts at a 2, 3 or 4 guard, so there is always length at the bottom.

On the head they read similarly from a distance. Up close the skin fade is sharper and the taper is softer, and that softness is the whole reason to pick one over the other.

Which one grows out better?

The taper, clearly. Because it never reaches skin, growth just thickens the existing gradient — there is no line to break. A taper at six weeks still looks like a haircut.

A skin fade at six weeks has a visible band where the bare section used to be. It is the single most common reason people decide fades 'do not suit them' when the real issue is the schedule.

Which suits which hair type?

Skin fades are sharpest on straight to wavy hair where the gradient is easy to read. On coily and Afro-textured hair a taper often looks better because the texture carries the shape without needing the contrast.

Thinning hair at the crown is usually better with a taper — a skin fade increases the contrast between the sides and the top, which draws the eye to exactly where you do not want it.

What should I ask for?

Name the guard and the height. 'Skin fade, blend to about two fingers above the ear' or 'taper starting at a 3, keep the weight on top'. Every Othman's cut opens with a consultation, so the barber will tell you if what you have asked for will not work with your growth pattern.

Four shops. One standard.
