Winter Haircuts: What Actually Works Under a Toque

Cuts that survive four months of hat hair

Short, textured cuts survive a toque best — a crop or textured French crop at two to three finger-widths falls back into shape, while anything needing height is flattened in ten minutes.

Between November and March every haircut in Waterloo Region spends most of its life under a toque. The cut that looked sharp leaving the chair is flattened by the time you get to the car, and the shape you paid for does not come back until you wash it.

Which haircuts hold up best under a hat?

Shorter on top and textured. A crop or a textured French crop at two to three finger-widths holds its shape because there is not enough length to crush — the hair falls back into place when the hat comes off.

The cuts that suffer are the ones that depend on height: pompadours, quiffs and anything that needs product to stand up. A toque undoes all of it in ten minutes.

Does a fade grow out worse in winter?

No, but it shows sooner. A skin fade starts losing its edge at about two weeks regardless of season. In winter you notice it less because the sides are covered, which is why people stretch a skin fade to five or six weeks in January and then wonder why it looks heavy.

A mid taper fade at a 2 or 3 guard grows out without a hard line, so six weeks between cuts looks deliberate rather than overdue.

What about dry scalp and static?

Indoor heating pulls moisture out of the scalp from about mid-November. Washing less often helps more than any product — two or three times a week rather than daily. If the scalp is already flaking, a conditioner worked into the skin rather than the hair does more than a shampoo marketed for dandruff.

Static is a dry-hair problem. A pea of cream or a light oil through the ends on the way out of the house kills it for the day.

Winter booking at Othman's

All four shops run their normal hours through the winter — ten to 7:30 on weekdays at Lancaster, Westheights and Guelph, with Waterloo open to 9 PM on weeknights and 11 PM on Friday and Saturday. Walk in or book online; both work, and the shops are quietest in the first hour after opening.

Four shops. One standard.
