Why a fade costs more than a haircut
A zero fade and a skin fade are the same 30-minute booking as a standard cut, but the work is not the same. A fade that goes to the skin has no guard to hide behind: every blend line has to be worked out by eye and corrected as it goes, and a mistake at the bottom cannot be covered.
Three to five dollars is the difference. It buys the part of the cut most likely to go wrong in less practised hands.
Where the money actually goes on a longer service
The hot towel shave is the one that changes the bill most. It is a straight razor against the grain with steam and hot towels to soften the beard first — a 30-minute service on its own, and the most skill-dependent thing in the shop.
